The Metabolic Audit
✨ Key Takeaways
- Your Metabolic Budget tracks the neurological "cost" of daily tasks; neurodivergent brains pay a higher "sensory tax" on standard activities, leading to Spoon Depletion.
- Decision Fatigue represents the severe cognitive drain of constant choices. Finding ways to surrender choice (like blind mystery boxes and scheduled rest) acts as radical self-care.
- Autistic burnout is systemic physiological exhaustion. Recovery requires distinguishing between somatic rest, cognitive routine, and sensory deprivation.
Why you're tired all the time (and how to fix it).
Let's talk about the "crash."
You know the one. You wake up fine, do one load of laundry, answer three emails, and suddenly it's 2 PM and you are lying face-down on the carpet unable to move your limbs.
For years, I thought this was just me being "bad at adulting." Then I learned about the Metabolic Budget and started managing mine.
The truth is, neurodivergent brains pay a "tax" on everything. A trip to the grocery store costs us 4x the energy it costs a neurotypical person because we are processing every single light, sound, and label.
This guide is how you stop overdrafting your energy bank account.

Let's see where your "spoons" are actually going. Click the tasks you try to do in a single day.
(If you're new here: Spoons = the limited units of energy you have for the day, based on Christine Miserandino's Spoon Theory (opens in a new tab).)

Diagnosis: What Kind of Tired Are You?Link to section
Not all exhaustion is created equal. As the National Autistic Society explains (opens in a new tab), the cure depends on the cause.
1. Somatic (Body)
Feels like: Your limbs are made of lead. Moving feels like walking underwater.
The Cause: Physical overexertion OR severe sensory processing (guarding against noise causes muscle tension).
The Cure: Passive rest. Sleep, weighted blankets, hot baths. Do NOT try to "push through."
2. Cognitive (Brain)
Feels like: You can't form sentences. Making a decision about dinner makes you want to cry.
The Cause: Too many decisions, masking, or social interaction.
The Cure: Routine & repetition. Watch a show you've seen 100 times. Eat a safe food. Remove variables.
3. Sensory Fried
Feels like: Your skin hurts. Every sound is a drill. You are irritable and snappy.
The Cause: Exposure to unmanaged sensory triggers (fluorescent lights, crowds).
The Cure: Deprivation. Dark room, silence, noise-canceling headphones. Turn off the input.
How to "Balance the Books"
If your calculator above showed you in the red, you need to cut costs. Psychology Today's breakdown (opens in a new tab) of energy management for neurodivergent people explains why. Here is how I do it:
The "One Big Thing" Rule: I only do ONE high-cost activity per day. If I have a doctor's appointment (Cost: 50), I am NOT also going grocery shopping (Cost: 40). That is a recipe for disaster.
Outsource the "Drainers": If cleaning the bathroom wrecks you for the whole day, is it worth $50 to have someone else do it once a month? If you can't afford that, can you trade chores with a roommate?
Scheduled "Rot" Time: I literally put "Do Nothing" on my calendar. It's not laziness; it's neural decompression. If it isn't scheduled, I'll fill it with anxiety about what I should be doing.
The 5PM Wall & Decision FatigueLink to section
We make ten thousand decisions a day. By 5PM, picking what to watch on TV can trigger a meltdown. This is Decision Fatigue, and for a taxed nervous system, it is actively unsafe.
When we reparent ourselves, we often focus on doing things—coloring, playing. But we forget to give ourselves the gift of receiving and surrendering the cognitive load of choice.
The Logic of the Mystery Box
The Happy Box is my favorite thing because it is the gift of surrender. I didn't have to choose the color. I didn't have to compare prices. I didn't have to read reviews. I just got to receive a surprise.

What is Autistic Burnout?
Autistic burnout is a state of severe physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion resulting from the chronic stress of masking and living in an unaccommodating neurotypical world. It often leads to a loss of skills and extreme sensory sensitivity.
What is a Metabolic Budget for neurodivergent people?
A Metabolic Budget applies 'Spoon Theory' to daily tasks, measuring the neurological cost of activities. Because neurodivergent brains process sensory data manually, a simple trip to the store might cost 40% of their daily energy supply, demanding strict budgeting to prevent meltdowns.
How do I fix Decision Fatigue?
To combat Decision Fatigue, you must surrender the cognitive load of choice. This involves implementing 'The One Big Thing' rule, outsourcing drainers, establishing rigid non-decision routines (like eating the exact same safe food), and embracing curated surprises rather than endless shopping.
